He wants something new but undecided on brand. I'm addicted to Glocks so of course that was my suggestion. GlockManDrew , May 24, May 24, 2. May 24, 3. May 24, 4. Kentguy , May 24, May 24, 7. I've harvested 50 plus deer in the last 25 years, with shotgun, muzzleloader, bow and handgun. Handguns I've used were a Contender and a Redhawk, both in 44 magnum. Based on my experience, IMO anything less than a 41 magnum is on the light side for deer. A 9mm is out of the question. The only Glock I would even consider and it's not a good choice for a dedicated hangun for deer is the 10mm.

And I'd limit my shots to, say, 25 yards or less with it, because shot placement is going to be key. A 10mm is a powerful semi-auto handgun, but it's not a powerful handgun or gun, per se.

The focus needs to be on harvesting the animal humanely. If your dad wants a dedicated hunting handgun, I recommend a 44 magnum, or larger. KeithC , May 24, May 24, 8. Glock, Glock or a Glock with a long barrel. I find it hard to miss with this weapon: May 24, 9. For a stock Glock a 10mm is hard to beat, for a non stock Glock a 45 super or a Rowland can be more powerful. Do you handload and do you cast your own boolits? How far do you plan to shoot deer? Do you plan to shoot anything bigger and tougher than deer?

Elk or maybe bear? Remember this, some guns can make a cartridge better and some boolits can also make a cartridge better, and when you add both of them together you have the best you can get for that cartridge. A good will shoot six of the gr WFN boolits in six inches or less at yards, yes that's two hundred yards and six shot groups.

We have used a load like that on elk with super results, the handloaded one. Some revolvers have longer and stronger cylinders that will allow you to get much more safely than other guns, I tend to favor them but have some of the other ones too. On the ranch that I live on most of the time we take shooting very seriously, from pistols to long range revolvers and rifles, the ranch is in the mountains of Idaho, we have a good range of game animals.

We also have a good range of calibers in rifles, up to WM and pistols to the. See this on the , http: May 24, Shot placement with a handgun is very important and as others have stated knowing your limitations is important.

Knowing your states laws on handguns for hunting is also important, the state I live in does not recognize anything that Glock makes which they consider suitable or legal, suggest you investigate beforehand. The handgun must have a 4" barrel length and the case measure 1.

I feel that your 44 mag. Would be the best option. I presently prefer Ruger Platforms due to their strength and have pushed the cartridge in my reloading. Rocky7 , May 24, He intends to be within 15 yards or he will not fire. The man has more patience than a monument. Go big or stay home;. Bruce M and G29guy06 like this. I'm in complete disagreement with those who think a 44mag is minimum for deer. There are plenty of "lesser" calibers that are both adequate and humane for deer.

However, even I would not pick the 9mm. It's just a little too light for humane hunting of medium sized game. All this speak of "being humane" G29guy06 , May 24, Aggiesam , sumoj and Macc like this.
